Bárbara Díaz-Tapia is a multidisciplinary artist and art educator who is interested in her country’s history. In 2006 she got her BFA at Escuela de Artes Plásticas, San Juan. Living in Puerto Rico her socially critical work centers on the political and ethical problems facing that community. She utilizes Caribbean myth, bodily deformity, the abject and the esoteric to lend her works an aura of the unknown. Diaz-Tapia’s three solo shows, Esperpentos y otros divertimentos familiares (Scraps and Other Family Divertimentos, 2008), Historia de la sangre y otros dibujos (History of Blood and Other Drawings, 2010) and most recently Espacios Íntimos (Intimate Spaces, 2015) all focus on aspects of the family dynamic and the enigmatic side of the domestic sphere. Diaz-Tapia’s work has been included in the most recent Muestra Nacional de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico and in the Vargas Gallery in Florida, among others. She is currently pursuing her MFA through the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA).
